Silkworms (Bombyx mori) have been used for centuries in the production of silk in China, it has been only fairly recently that these insects have become readily available as a regular feeder insect for captive animals. This process has been accelerated by the development of a specific artificial diet used solely for raising silkworms. Whereas before the only way to maintain these insects was the monotonous and painstaking daily collection of fresh mulberry leaf, now it is as simple as mixing some mulberry powder with water, cooking it in a microwave for a short period and storing that in the fridge for days or even weeks providing a convenient and complete diet to raise these caterpillars.
The benefits for animals being fed silkworms are massive. They are generally regarded as probably the single most nutritious of all the commonly available insect food items as they are relatively low in fat, high in protein, have a good calcium:phosphorus ratio, are a good source of essential vitamins, especially A and B complex and to top it all off they are very palatable to most animals and easy to digest. Livefood's silkworms are sold in three convenient sizes to suit your needs, small, medium and large, size ranges of each are shown under the guide photo on each of their respective product pages, plus we offer a range of sizes of packets of silkworm food in case you would like to grow your silkworms on to a larger size. They are easy to house and handle as they don't require any special heating, humidity, lighting, etc. and as they aren't escape artists or prone to hiding away the cage set up is very simple and straightforward to maintain. just keep their boxes clean and keep the food coming and they will be happy!
